Immediate Response

  1. Call 1111
  2. Public Safety will:
    1. Respond to investigate
    2. Activate the building fire alarm system, if necessary
 
If you receive a telephone bomb threat
  1. Do not hang up
  2. Remain calm
  3. Try to prolong the conversation and get as much information as possible
  4. Utilize Bomb Threat Check List
  5. Note the time and what you hear. Are there background noises, such as music, voices, or cars?
  6. Describe any dissension in the caller’s voice or tone. Any accent? What sex? What age? Any unusual words or phrases?
  7. Does the caller seem to know about the West Chester Hospital? How is the bomb location described? Does the caller use a person’s name? Does the caller give his/her name?
  8. When the call is over, complete the bomb threat report checklist located on the inside panel of this manual.
  9. Then immediately Public Safety at 1111 and relay all the information you collected. Identify yourself—give your name, location and phone number.
  10. After this is done, notify your supervisor immediately. Then stand by for further instructions.
  11. If it is deemed necessary to evacuate, you will be notified by your supervisor or the overhead paging system. Evacuate via the primary route for your area, or by the alternate route if so directed
If you discover a suspicious item
  1. Leave it untouched and secure the area.
  2. Public Safety at 1111 and report a suspicious item giving an accurate description of the item. You may be asked to assist in a search because you are familiar with the area.
  3. If so directed by Public Safety, evacuate your area.
  4. Cell phones, two-way radios and any other transmitting devices emitting radio waves may not be used in the immediate area of the suspected bomb location.
If a threat comes via Email or Social Media
  1. Do not delete or respond to email or communication.
  2. Public Safety at 1111 and report a suspicious or threatening electronic communication.
  3. If threat is via email, contact 298-6372 and report to IS&T, advise that Public Safety has been notified.
  4. If so directed by Public Safety, evacuate your area.
  5. Cell phones, two-way radios and any other transmitting devices emitting radio waves should not be used in the immediate area of the suspected bomb location.
 

Recovery

  1. Ensure that patient’s care, safety and well-being have been attended to.
  2. Debrief within your department or unit.
  3. Ensure all equipment is operating within normal limits.
  4. Open all fire doors.
 

Report any deficiencies found that would jeopardize safe operation of your department and report to your department or clinical manager immediately.
