Immediate Response
Smell something burning, but see no smoke or flame:
- Call 1111
- Public Safety will:
- Respond to investigate
- Activate the building fire alarm system, if necessary

Active Alarm- Activate the alarm by pulling the nearest fire alarm pull station.
- Call 1111
- Exact location of fire
- Room number & building
- Your name
- Type of fire, if known
- Summon help while remaining at the person’s side. Shout or yell if necessary.
- Begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if you know how, and/or continue while assistance arrives and takes over.
Be prepared to give:

Extinguish FireTo operate a fire extinguisher, follow the PASS method:
- Pull the pin
- Aim the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the handle
- Sweep the extinguisher from side to side at the base of the fire

Evacuate for Fire or Smoke- Evacuation should be coordinated with one of the following:
- Manager/Supervisor of affected area
- Safety Officer
- Emergency Management Officer
- Public Safety
- Fire Department
- If time allows, turn on all lights and close all doors behind you as you leave.
- Do not use elevators. Do not run.
- Follow the safest evacuation route.

P Pull the pin
A Aim extinguisher nozzle at base of fire
S Squeeze the handle
S Sweep extinguisher side to side at base of fire
Recovery
- Ensure that patient’s care, safety and well-being have been attended to.
- Debrief within your department or unit.
- Ensure all equipment is operating within normal limits.
- Open all fire doors.
