Electrical Power Failure
Who to Contact:

What to Expect:
  • West Chester Hospital has emergency power supply.
  • Corridor exit egress lighting will be on during power outage.
  • During power outage please use Red  Electrical Outlets.
 
Responsibility of User:
  • Ensure that life support systems and critical research equipment are on Red  Electrical Outlets (emergency power supply).
  • Ventilate patient by hand if necessary.
  • Complete cases in progress ASAP.
  • Use backup flashlights.
Electrical Power Total Failure
Who to Contact:
Plant Operations
Notify operator to contact respiratory and dialysis.
What to Expect:

Failure of all electrical systems.

 
Responsibility of User:
  • Utilize flashlights.
  • Utilize hand-ventilate.
  • Patient/residents manually regulate IVs.
  • Do not start new cases.
  • Take action to provide continuity of care.
Elevators Out of Service
Who to Contact:
Plant Operations
What to Expect:
  • All vertical movement will be by stairwell.
  • Elevators 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and Energy Center elevators are on the emergency generator.
Responsibility of User:
Elevators Stopped Between Floors
Who to Contact:
Plant Operations, or Command Center @ 1111
What to Expect:

Use elevator intercom.

 
Responsibility of User:

Keep verbal contact with personnel still in elevator and let them know help is on the way.

Fire Alarm System
Who to Contact:
Plant Operations, or Command Center @ 1111
What to Expect:

No fire alarms. Sprinkler trip will go undetected.

 
Responsibility of User:

With no fire alarm or sprinkler system institute fire watch; minimize fire hazards; cancel all hot work permits.

Medical Equipment

What to Expect:

Failure of medical equipment.

 
Responsibility of User:

Replace and tag defective equipment.

Medical Gases and Vacuum
Who to Contact:
Notify 1111 to report Medical Gas issue
Plant Operations
Respiratory & Materials Distribution
What to Expect:

Gas alarms will activate no Oxygen (O2) medical air or Nitrous Oxide (NO2).

 
Responsibility of User:
  • Check unit based backup systems for proper operation.
  • Hand ventilate patient/residents; transfer patient/residents if necessary.
  • Contact Materials Distribution for portable tanks and suction equipment.
  • Safely curtail research Operations.
Natural Gas Failure or Leak

What to Expect:

Mercaptin odor no flames on burners.

 
Responsibility of User:

Plant Engineering will close all gas valves near the meters; switch boiler to oil.

Nurse Call System

Replace and tag defective equipment.

Sewer Stoppage/Backup

What to Expect:

Toilet sinks and/or floor drains may back up.

  • Do not flush toilets.
  • Do not use water.
Steam Failure
Who to Contact:

What to Expect:

No building heat hot water; sterilization will be compromised.

 
Responsibility of User:

Conserve sterile materials and all linens. Provide extra blankets.

Telephones

Total lack of phone service.

 
Responsibility of User:

Use overhead pages cell phones where approved and 2-way radios where available.

Water

What to Expect:
  • Sinks toilets inoperative.
  • No sprinkler system.
 
Responsibility of User:
  • Institute fire watch; conserve water supplies.
  • In the event that water cannot be restored in a reasonable period of time toilets can be manually flushed.
Ventilation

  • No ventilation.
  • No heating or cooling.
 
Responsibility of User:
